Jan Wijnants Haarlem (?) circa 1635 - 1684 Amsterdam

In a private family collection since the 1940s.

We are grateful to Marijke C. de Kindelder of the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie, The Hague for endorsing the attribution on the basis of photographs.  She dates the painting to circa 1659 or slightly later and compares it to several dated works by Wijnants from that year that show similar characteristics.¹  Though the staffage in Wijnants landscapes was often done by another artist, such as Johannes Lingelbach, in her opinion the staffage in the present work was done by Wijnants himself.
