Catalogue Note

The landscapes and cavalry subjects Duplessis painted are reminiscient of the ouevre of the Dutch 17th century artist, Philips Wouwermans. Another landscape by Duplessis with travellers and soldiers resting, offered as one of a pair, Paris, Christie's, December 15, 2004, lot 568, depicts the same fortifications as in the present composition, but in reverse.
