Catalogue Note

The present accomplished alabaster is characteristic of the work available to visitors to Florence. Florentine sculptors active around 1900 worked closely together. Many individual artists carved and signed works indepedently and at other times worked under the auspices of one of the retail galleries, such as Bazzanti or Andreotti. John Murray's, Handbook for Travellers in Central Italy from 1867 states: 'Bazzanti, on the Lung'arno Corsini... keeps one of the largest warehouses in Florence for alabaster figures...'.
