first edition, folio (514 x 338mm.), engraved additional title-page by Filbot and Née after Cassas, frontispiece, map and 66 plates (some folding or double-page), engraved headpieces, contemporary red morocco-backed boards, marginal tear to one text leaf (pp.15/16) with slight loss, plate 7 torn and repaired, short closed tears to a few other plates, a few spots and light staining to some plates, one tissue guard torn with loss, binding very rubbed

Catalogue Note

Cassas visited Istria and Dalmatia in 1782 when he was comissioned to make drawings of the antiquities in the area, particularly in and around Trieste and Split. The second part of the text is by Lavallé, edited from Cassas' journal of the voyage.
