Description

  • Collection of ten autograph manuscripts about the larynx, one inscribed ("par M. Geoffroy St hilaire"), including twelve pages of anatomical drawings
the working drafts, with extensive corrections and alterations, some with additional passages and revisions written on paper inserted or pasted-over the originals, written in brown ink on a variety of papers. The manuscripts comprise:



1) a group of about 20 diagrams on 12 pages, of the larynx in various animals, including fish, crows, ducks, calves, and turkeys, carefully drawn in pen and ink and in pencil, some captioned and annotated by Saint-Hilaire, 12 pages, various sizes



2) drafts of 2 essays on the mammary glands of aquatic mammals, dolphins, porpoises and whales, working manuscripts with several pastedowns, entitled "Anatomie des glandes mammaires d'un marsouin observée sur un sujet pris a Honfleur/ 17 mars 1834" and "Traiteé physiologiste, où l'on considère l'emploi des diverses parties des glandes mammaires des cétacés", 45 pages, 8vo (c.22 x 13cms), paginated [1]-20 and 1-[25], stiched into a copy of "La Gazette de France" for 6 March 1834



3) the opening of an article about the larynx and voice production ("...ou Nouvelle théorie de la Voix"...), with remarks on its application to musical instruments ("Du son et des conditions nécessaires à sa production dans les instrumens de musique"), entitled ("De la manière dont l'organe respiratoire emploie unes de ses parties les moins influentes, à la production de la voix"), and inscribed by the author ("par M. Geoffroy St Hilaire"), 2 pages, 4to, docketed and signed by the astronomer Joseph Delambre



4) draft of "Réflections pour tenir lieu d'un texte explicatif au tableau Synoptique qui précède, presentées a l'academie des Sciences le 21 Xbre 1831", lacking the conclusion, 4 pages, 4to, browning



5) manuscript table of muscles in the throat, "muscles attachés a l'os hydoide... a la branche tyroidienne", 4 pages, folio, L & J watermark, stained and frayed along left-hand margin



6) group of drafts and notes on the respiratory apparatus, the function of the larynx, and voice timbre, the neck muscles of a cow, the facial muscles of the turkey and a table of muscles of a duck, (including part of an essay written in the third person, but apparently autograph), 7 pages, 4to

Catalogue Note

Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire (1772-1844) was Professor of Zoology at the Musée National d'Histoire Naturelle in Paris from 1793 until his death in 1844. He was the foremost pre-Darwinian French scientist and laid down a general zoological description of all animal forms.
