Catalogue Note

Perhaps the rarest and finest work on salmon. The silver heightening lends an exuberant vitality to the plates, hand-coloured after live fish (the colours of which fade in death). The text on embryology is by Carl Vogt. Despite their collaboration on this milestone in developmental science, Agassiz and Vogt were later to diverge on their views of Darwin, Vogt becoming a staunch supporter of evolution and Agassiz "[trusting] to outlive this mania" to the very last.
