Catalogue Note
second volume of lopes de castanheda's rare monumental work on the portuguese empire in the indies.
From 1528 for a decade Lopes de Castanheda travelled widely in Asia before returning to Lisbon to continue his research through numerous interviews of fellow travellers. This second book of eight (the first had appeared the previous year) covers the years 1505-09 and deals with the discovery of Madagascar, the expansion in Africa, India, Malacca, Ceylon and Sumatra. The exploits of Alfonso de Alburquerque, admiral of the fleet between 1506 and 1508 and then Viceroy of India, loom large here: including his capture of Socotra and the ravaging of the coast of Oman.
