Calvocoressi, the translator of the English edition of Bartók's seminal treatise on Hungarian folk music, comprising the greater part of the first main Chapter "A" and all of the third, Chapter "C", both with their summaries (lacking Chapter "B"); Chapter "A" dealing with the old style of Hungarian peasant music and containing a detailed discussion of the rhythmic patterns of melodies of varying syllabic length, with a concluding summary ("Zusammenfassung"), Chapter 'C' dealing with other tunes in Hungarian folk music, likewise ending with a summary ("Schlusswort"), written in black ink, with a number of musical examples, some headings underlined in red crayon, a few entries in pencil in the margins, some deletions and corrections

A magyar népdal, Bartok's celebrated treatise on Hungarian folk music was first published, in Hungary, in 1924. The present manuscript, a German translation in the hand of Márta Ziegler, Bartók's first wife, was used as a basis for the 1931 English translation by M.D. Calvocoressi. It consists of all of chapter 'C' (cf. pp.61-97 of the German edition, published by Walter de Gruyter & Co.in Berlin in 1925) and the larger part of chapter 'A' (cf. pp.21-40 of the same edition). This manuscript is remarkable in that it differs in many details from the 1925 German printed edition, a circumstance which indicates that it is an early version preceding Bartók's proofreading of the text.
