Catalogue Note
"Outra Vez" is, like "Chega de saudade", one of the key songs in the early history of the bossa nova, featured on Tom Jobim's celebrated album Cançâo do amor demais" ("Song of excessive love"), recorded in April 1958. This is the composer's autograph manuscript of the song, a classic of popular music: such manuscripts are of the greatest rarity at auction.
"Outra Vez" and "Chega de Saudade", were the only songs on the album to feature the striking guitar playing of Joâo Gilberto. In this manuscript of "Outra Vez", however, the complex rhythmic notation for guitar is written out by the composer. The bossa nova evolved from the samba (which is how this song is described on the title-page), and is characterized by a deliberate avoidance of any single element predominating, so that the voice is not emphasized over the complex rhythms and textures of the accompaniment . The melody of this sophisticated samba is one of the most beguiling on the album, but is fragmented and totally integrated into the music texture. There is a sophisticated and sonorous accompaniment in the strings, which cannot be appreciated from the 1962 printed vocal score.
