Description

  • Six autograph letters, together with one by Donizetti.
Six good autograph letters signed ("Ch Gounod"), in English and French, to Mrs Louisa Brown, about the dress rehearsal of La Rédemption at Birmingham Town Hall, the threats by Mrs W [Georgina Weldon] to retain his manuscripts and even destroy them, recalling his love for her, about the "spurious songs" circulated under his name by Mr Farnie, the offer by Chappell of an annual fee of £2,000 for the rights to publish his music, discussing taking the waters and arranging opera tickets, 19 pages, 8vo, 5 autograph envelopes (stamps removed), Tavistock House (London), St Leonard's on Sea, St Cloud (Paris), Blangy (Calvados), Birmingham, 30 December 1873-17 August 1882; together with 8 letters by Georgina Weldon to H Dexter Truscott, and 3 others

...as regards Mrs W, I know through herself that she threatens me to keep and even destroy all my manuscripts, because she considers herself injured and insulted by the formal desire which my French lawyer Mr Delacourtie expressed of having back all my M.S., (my undeniable & unquestionable property), before any agreement being settled between the Ws & me for the continuation or acquisition of my business. As Mrs W adds that no Frenchman is capable of honesty...I consider this proceeding as a gratuitous insult to us all...

Donizetti, Gaetano. Autograph letter to Amédé Jaubert, in French, about his request to be accorded the Légion d'Honneur ("...decerné à ceux qui revinirent avec Napoleon de L'Ile d'Elbe..."), explaining that his preoccupations with the staging of his new opera [ La Fille du régiment?]  have prevented him from making his acquaintance before, asking for his papers to be returned to him and informing him of his departure on the 5 or 6 March, 2 pages, 8vo, integral autograph address panel, [Paris], "22 fevrier" [1840s]
