Catalogue Note

Brahms famously never visited England, even refusing two years later the offer of an honorary doctor's degree from the University of Cambridge, apparently on account of his reluctance to cross the Channel. In 1880, he was invited by the Directors of the Royal Philharmonic Society to conduct three concerts in the following season, but he again declined.
