Catalogue Note

This is the proof for the first edition of Wolf's final version of his setting of Robert Reinick's poem, originally set by Wolf as a song in 1889. The first version of the arrangement for male chorus and orchestra dates from 1890, the manuscript of which is in the Austrian National Library. This vocal score was published in 1895, the full score in 1902. The poet's name is given as Reinecke on the proof.
