Catalogue Note
The 2nd Cycle series is one element of Artek's progressive environmental strategy toward furniture production. Artek collected vintage Aalto pieces of furniture from flea markets, private homes, kindergartens, schools, universities, warehouses and garages. As part of their conceptual vision, these classics have been embedded with RIFD/NFC tags and given a new lease on life. The coded RFID tags record not only the furniture's history, but through the Artek 2nd Cycle website, new owners are given the opportunity to upload and add their own stories.
By creating the 2nd Cycle, Artek has raised the discussion of conscious consuming while praising authentic design and honouring the importance of originality. Solidly made and timeless, these chairs continue to be redefined to the present day as iconic and innovative statements of design.
"Nothing old is ever reborn but neither does it totally disappear. And that which was once born, will always re-appear in new form"
