Condition
This work is in generally good overall condition. The canvas is slightly wavy by the corners. A minor paint loss upwards towards left. Minor traces of soiling along borders and traces of threadlike and stable craquelures by lower right corner. Under UV light are visible minor retouching along left, upper and right borders and by the lower right corner. It's also visible a minor punctiform retouching by the center of the canvas.

Il 25 ottobre 1948 André Breton informa con una lettera Matta della sua esclusione dal gruppo surrealista per "ignominia morale" perché sospettato di essere responsabile del suicidio di Arshile Gorky. Victor Brauner, molto legato a Matta, non avvallando questa decisione, viene escluso a sua volta nel novembre dello stesso anno: la serie di dipinti che segue questi eventi drammatici, intitolati Rétractés e realizzati fra il 1949 e il 1952, testimonia quindi un episodio doloroso nella storia del movimento surrealista all'interno del quale l'artista era stato accolto nel 1932.
