The painting and canvas are in good condition. The canvas is clear and quite taut. Examination with ultraviolet light reveals only a slight spot of retouching above the right eyebrow (viewer's right). Restoration is only visible under UV light. The paint layers are intact and in stable condition. (The painting was examined within its frame). Ancient Balinese inscription on the lower right is translated as follows: "Sapuniki wenten jatma saking Bali nyingal putran ipun ring sasih kapanesan dados putran ipune ngalungsur susu ring ibun ipune saantukan panese. Dados Ibun ipun numbas daluman mangda susun ipune tis. Duaning sapunika jatma puniki mararean beten tarune rimbun. Sami seneng. Bali." Bahasa Indonesia: "Ada orang Bali sedang menggendong anaknya di saat musim panas, karena haus anaknya minta disusui Ibunya. Saking panasnya sang Ibu membeli daluman ( minuman khas Bali ) agar air susu sang Ibu segar. Karena itu mereka berteduh di bawah pohon rindang. Mereka senang. Bali." English: "A Balinese is carrying her child in the summer. Thirsty, the child longs to drink his/her mother's milk. The weather was so hot, however, that the mother buys daluman (a traditional Balinese drink) so that her milk is fresh, and they happily rest under the shade of a verdant tree. Bali."
