Catalogue Note
Ardon's engagement with the land is one of the constant themes of his art. In every decade he rendered the landscape, at different times of day and night, with the land sometimes predominating over the sky, and at other times the sky filling the larger part of the canvas and dominating the land. In Golan, Ardon achieves the perfect balance, with the horizon line placed in the very center of the work. The brilliant sky, illuminated with a shimmering full moon, casts its light upon the landscape which comes to life in a cascade of colors, blues, reds yellows and whites. In its luminous palette and abstracted forms, Golan achieves the goal for which the artist strived thoughout his life: " 'to render the light not only externally – impressionistically – but also internally, to convey the awe-inspiring primeval nature of the land'" (Arturo Schwarz, Mordecai Ardon: The Colors of Time, The Israel Museum and the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, 2003, p. 22)
