Catalogue Note

Born in Lubeck, Germany in 1863, Herman Linde studied at the Munich Art Academy where he came under the sway of Wilhelm Leibl (1844-1900) a German realist painter who was a close follower of Gustav Courbet. Leibl's renditions of landscapes and still lifes followed the alla prima style, based on a commitment to representing reality exactly as seen by the eye, which exercised a deep influence on Linde. He traveled to Egypt, India and the Far East and painted a variety of works depicting the people and surroundings of the places he had visited.

It is known that Linde was a guest of his Royal Highness the Nizam of Hyderabad, and traveled and worked in the area. The idyllic landscape portrayed in the present lot with cows grazing beneath swaying palm trees, could well be set in South India.

See Sotheby's New York, September 19, 2007, lot 106, for a portrait of a young girl by Linde.  Another painting by him, titled 'Procession of Indians,' is presently in the collection of the Bremen Museum.
