Description
- Picchavai of Shrinathji Playing Holi
- Pigments on cloth
- 89 by 78 3/4 in. (226 by 200 cm.)
The joyous spring festival of Holi is depicted with great verve in this painting. Shrinathji and Radha occupy center stage surrounded by gopis, all shown spraying colored water at each other.
The architectural backdrop is based on the model of palaces that were being constructed by rulers in Rajasthan throughout the 19th Century. The bulidings are multi-storied, with domed balconies ornamented with jali screens set over expansive facades.
Compare the present lot with a miniature painting of the same scene in the Paul Walter Collection, see Sotheby's New York, November 14, 2002, lot 38.
