Description

Standing in samapada on a double lotus pedestal, four-armed, the upper hands holding a tanka and a sakti, the lower hands forming abhayamudra and varadamudra, the figure is adorned with jewelry characteristic of south Indian bronzes, a tall mitered headdress, a third eye clearly incised into his forehead.

Catalogue Note

In southern India Karttikeya is known as Subramanya and there are a number of variations of the deity. The combination of iconography would suggest that this figure could be a form known as Guha-Subrahmanya. Compare to a similar stone Chola example published in Stella Kramrisch, Manifestations of Shiva, Philadelphia, 1981, p. 81, fig. 66.
