Description
- Altarpiece with Parsvanatha

- Height: 12 1/4 in (31 cm)
The central figure of Parsvanatha is seated on a lion throne beneath the seven-headed snake canopy surrounded by chauri bearers, with two elephants on either side of his head bathing him, two Jinas standing either side, the full figures of the nine planetary deities seated at the front of the throne, and an inscription on the back.
Catalogue Note
The Digambara sect of Jainism was prominent in Madhya Pradesh, see P. Pal, The Peaceful Liberators, Jain Art from India, LACMA, 1994, p. 138, fig. 25, though the piece also shows stylistic elements from Karnataka.
