Description

  • Buddha Shakyamuni
  • Copper Alloy
  • Height: 15 1/4 in (38.8 cm)
The Buddha is depicted on a tall, elegantly stepped throne, his right hand placed in bhumisparsimudra, the "earth-touching" gesture, his monastic robes covering one shoulder and edged with a wavy design, the face with a meditative expression and the hair rising to form an usnisha topped with a jar-shaped finial.

Provenance

Charlotte Horstmann, acquired 1979

Condition

The polished brown surface of the metal has slight traces of black lacquer and red and green pigments, the lower edge of the pedestal is chipped and the flame jar-shaped finial has pitting from erosion. A back has a crack with an old repair running from the bottom of the Buddha figure widening slightly to the foot of the pedestal, probably a casting flaw. Good condition.
