Catalogue Note

Jagat Singh who succeeded Sawai Pratap Singh to the throne of Jaipur, was the last of that state's independent rulers. He patronized the production of large-format portraits such as the present lot, which were executed in the Rajput miniature painting tradition. After him, Jaipur ceded to the British and the traditional style of painting gave way to a more realist métier following the Company School.
