Catalogue Note

Depictions of Dipak Raga generally feature a couple in the presence of a lamp or a flame from where this Raga derives its name. Here the artist has substituted the radiant moon as a metaphor for light, which floods the terrace and illuminates the caressing couple.

Compare the similar treatment of the male figure with an illustration of Sarang Ragaputra, also from Bundi but of slightly earlier date, illustrated in Klaus Ebeling, Ragamala Painting, Basel, Paris and New Delhi, 1973, p. 139. For other illustrations of Dipak Raga see ibid., no. 189, p. 241 and no. 202, p. 245.
