Krishna's arrival is eagerly awaited by his female companions who can barely contain their excitement, while his cows graze contentedly in the leafy shade by the banks of the Yamuna.
The Bikaner atelier was particularly influenced by Mughal artisanal style and this is manifest in the careful attention paid to depth of field, the delicately rendered forms and detailed observation of flora and fauna in the present painting. The variety of animal forms incorporated in the work and the finesse with which they are represented is particularly noteworthy. Some, such as a pair of monkeys and a group of hyenas, seem to melt into the rocky outcrop seen in the distance, which was yet another Mughal convention.
Compare the treatment of the landscape, particularly the beautifully patterned trees, with an illustration of Kakubha Ragini; see Hermann Goetz, The Art and Architecture of Bikaner State, Oxford, 1950, pl. V.
