Description

  • An Illustration depicting the Worship of Shiva
  • Opaque watercolor heightened with gold on paper

  • image 13 3/8 by 18 1/4 in. (34 by 46.3 cm.)
  • folio 15 1/2 by 20 3/8 in. (39.3 by 51.7 cm.) unframed
The Illustration depicts Shiva as the Omniscient One, encircled by a golden halo and situated against the snowy peaks of his mountainous abode. The deity is seen here in his mendicant form, clad in nothing save for the snakes that encircle his waist, neck and arms. The artist retains Shiva's warrior aspect by adding the battleaxe and bow.

Shiva is flanked by his worshippers including mendicants clad in animal skins and leaf skirts seen on the left and his ganas or followers accompanied by two princely figures standing within a golden pavilion on the right.
