In this illustration from the epic Mahabharata, the Pandava warrior Arjuna is seen standing in a clearing amidst a rocky landscape while a procession of celebrators winds its way in and out of the picture.

Catalogue Note

The present illustration is possibly from the Adi Parva of the epic where Arjuna goes into exile to atone for his errors and spends a year wandering the forests as an ascetic. Therefore he is depicted with a rosary in his hand despite being clad in his customary suit of armor.
