Condition

Work is in fairly good condition with scattered surface irregularities (inherent to casting process) on front. On the back there is scattered loss/corrosion to patina, particularly in lower half of figure's legs. There are very small losses to bronze on top of head. This work would benefit from cleaning/conservation.

Catalogue Note

The year before he created the present work, Chadwick was selected to represent Great Britain at the 28th Venice Biennale. This was a major turning point in the artist's career and accentuated the significant influence of his work on the field of modern sculpture. Alan Bowness wrote at the time, "Chadwick himself has been one of the revelations of the Biennale. Quite apart from the distinguished and highly original quality of his imagination, it is the beauty and sensitivity of execution that impresses. He may make use of the 'creative accident', but the very sureness of his control makes the most modern sculpture look simply incompetent by the side of his work. This Biennale award marks the emergence of Lynn Chadwick as a figure of international artistic importance" (quoted in Nico Koster & Paul Levine, op. cit., p. 77).
