Catalogue Note
This energetic, luminous still-life, painted between 1936 and 1938, is an excellent example of André Derain's ability to imbue the inanimate with palpable emotion. Derain was heavily influenced by the still lives of 17th century Flemish and Dutch painters, an influence that is particularly evident in this painting. The still life, since its first appearance in 17th century Holland, was a fascinating genre for art appreciators, as at first glance its arrangement of beautiful objects contains no story or message. However, using vibrant colours and active compositions, artists nevertheless succeeded in evoking powerful emotional atmospheres.
