Catalogue Note

During the time that the present work was painted, Lautrec had just begun classes under the supervision of Léon Bonnat. The first sitters for his paintings were workers in his family's vineyard at Céleryan, where the artist spent his summers. Although little is known of the man posing in this particular work, it clearly demonstrates Lautrec's excellent grasp of human form. The rendering of the man's body is highlighted dramatically with rich and rapid strokes against a dark background of a more subdued palette.
