Condition

The movement is running, however it may require service soon. The dial appears to have been cleaned at some point as some of the hard enamel on the signature is now lacking. The tachometer scale appears to have been partially re-printed. It is still in nice condition overall, with a strong two-tone look. The case has been polished and the lugs have lost some of their sharpness. The case bears some light scuffs from wear throughout. There is some oxidation to the band at the bottom chronograph pusher. The inscription to the case back reads 'Beautifully 40 my love, Patty,' although it is rubbed and difficult to read. The strap of this wristwatch is made from an endangered species; please refer to Important Notices for further information.

Catalogue Note

Accompanied by an Extract from the Archives confirming production with pink dial in 1944 and sale on June 28th of the following year.

With its distinctive angular lugs and square buttons, this model, Ref. 1579, is among Patek Philippe's most iconic chronograph wristwatches. The first known example of this model dates to 1943, making the present lot among the first produced. Examples from this first generation differ from the later examples in that the enamel baton indexes were replaced around 1950 by applied square indexes.

Our research indicates that fewer than ten examples in pink gold were produced annually over the two decade period during which this model was produced. The present example's desirability is enhanced by the very attractive two-tone detail of the pink dial.

The movement of an example from this reference is illustrated in Huber, M., & Banbery, A., Patek Philippe Wristwatches, Vol. 2, Second Edition, p. 265.
