Christy Mathewson 1925 Signed Contract As President Of Boston Braves

The greatest pitcher in Giants' history, Christy Mathewson was an idol to his fans. A clean-cut, well spoken gentleman, Mathewson was a rare breed in the early days of 20th century baseball. The right-hander won more games than any other pitcher in National League history and was one of the first five players elected to the Hall of Fame. Matty concluded his career as a player with the New York Giants in 1916 and later as a player/manager with the Cincinnati Reds in 1918. On February 20, 1923 Christy Mathewson became president of the Boston Braves after buying the club for $300,000 with New York attorney Judge Emil Fuchs and Bostonian James McDonough. The deal did not include Braves Field, which still belonged to James Gaffney. This is a rare Boston Braves contract for player Robert Smith signed by Mathewson on March 24^{th, 1925 during his brief tenure as team President. Matty's "C. Mathewson" signature is beautifully formed and rates 9/10 in boldness. The contract itself is in EX-MT to NM condition with typical fold lines.
