The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com , an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. Although this picture is in very respectable condition, the appearance is not everything it should be. The paint layer is quite dull and slightly dirty. The canvas has a wax lining which could be reversed and perhaps improved upon. The paint layer itself is in very healthy condition with only a few isolated retouches here and there. There is a group of retouches in the clothing on the right shoulder of the figure, a few in the chest and some spots in the face. However, despite the fact that the old varnish is quite opaque and discourages the ultraviolet light, if the picture were to be cleaned and reexamined, the condition would actually seem to be very good.
