English 18th Century Follower of Pieter Casteels III (Antwerp 1684 - 1749 Richmond)

The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com , an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. This painting is quite dirty. It has an old glue lining which stabilizes the paint layer but which is a little uneven and could be improved. The painting itself seems to be in lovely condition. The paint layer is unabraded and appears to be un-retouched. Beneath the old yellow varnish there may be some retouches in the background that we are currently unaware of however, it seems unlikely that any of these retouches are numerous or an issue worth mentioning. Overall the condition is excellent and the picture will respond well to restoration.
