Condition
The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com , an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's.
The reverse of this oak panel is unreinforced and the panel is flat. There is a slightly visible pattern of cracking, in the sky particularly, but this is not unstable or unsightly. The paint layer is most likely clean and has been varnished and retouched.
Retouches are visible in the sky in the center right, in the center left and in a few other isolated dots. In the landscape, foreground and water, the only restoration of note is in the wall behind the barge. Overall, the condition is very good.
This painting is in similar condition to its mate. The cracking in the sky has raised the paint layer slightly more. There is some restoration visible in the center left of the sky yet other than this, only a few isolated spots of restoration have been applied. The picture is presentable, although the paint layer in the sky should be monitored to make sure that further lifting does not occur.
