Condition

Ivory ground. This miniature is in excellent condition, the pale tone being typical of Smart at this period. The burnished gold reverse of the frame has a few small dends.

Catalogue Note

Agnes, here depicted aged six years old, was the only daughter and heiress of Thomas Cockburn of the East India Company Service and of Bedford Hill, Surrey. She married on the 13th November 1815 Henry Stafford Northcote (1792-1850), the son and heir of Sir Stafford Northcote, 7th Bt. The marriage produced three children, the eldest of whom, Sir Stafford Henry Northcote (1818-1887), succeeded to his grandfather's baronetcy, and was created Earl of Iddesleigh and Viscount St. Cyres in 1885.
