Condition
Ivory ground.
This work is in very good condition, save a very small spot of dry mould in the sky to the left of the sitters bonnet and a slight shadow on her right cheek. The latter does not show up at all in a raking light and may well be originating from the reverse.

Catalogue Note
This miniature of Miss Shuckburgh by Edridge, signed and dated 1790, is possibly the earliest of a number of versions painted by the artist. A replica, dated September 1793, is illustrated in Williamson 1904, pl. LXIX, fig. 5 (collection of Lord Hawkesbury). In the accompanying caption the author mentions two others, one in the collection of Col. Cotes and another 'believed to exist'. The present work may be one of these.
