Description
- Thomas Day
- Portrait of a Gentleman
- circa 1790
- 7.7 by 6.2 cm.; 3 by 2 1/2 in.
seated at a table holding a book, wearing a damson-coloured coat, with a white waistcoat and cravat, gold and silver frame set with circular-cut diamonds
Provenance
Arturo Lopez-Willshaw, his sale Sotheby's Monaco, 23 June 1976, lot 5
Condition
Ivory ground.
Overall this miniature is in fine condition, however, as the artist used a lot of gum arabic there are localized problems of crazing. This is most evident in the shaded areas under the arms and folds of his coat, where very minor paint loss has occurred. On the column to the right there is a small watermark.
The late 19th century frame is set with diamonds with an approximate value of £1,000-1,500.
