Description
- Jean-Urbain Guerin
- Portrait of a French officer
- signed c.r.: J. Guerin, circa 1810
- 6.5 by 4.2 cm.; 2 9/16 by 1 11/16 in.
wearing a dark brown uniform with cerulean collar and gold lace, with the badge of the Order of the Légion d'Honneur, silver-gilt frame set with cultured pearls
Provenance
Anonymous sale, Christie's London, 3 December 1963, lot 111
Condition
Ivory ground.
This miniature is in good colour order. On part of the front of the uniform and on the ribbon of the decoration there is slightly uneven surface which suggests that part of the final paint layer has been lost. Surface dust focused on this area further exsentuates the negative, which in some lights can barely be seen.

Catalogue Note
The details on the sitter's uniform indicate that he was an Aide-de-Camp in the French Army. The epaulettes on his shoulders reveal that he held the rank of Captain.
