Catalogue Note

The inscription reads: "1935-1985 Presented with love and respect to Rabbi Robert Kahn from Congregation Emanu El on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of his ordination as a Rabbi, June 7, 1985".

Rabbi Robert I. Kahn (1910-2002) was born in Des Moines, IA and educated at the University of Cincinnati and the Hebrew Union College.  Upon his 1935 ordination he relocated to Houston, where he served as Assistant Rabbi at Temple Beth Isreal, and later as Senior Rabbi at Emanu El.  Rabbi Kahn served Emanu El for thirthy-three years, and became Rabbi Emeritus in 1978.  Known as a spirited and passionate leader and educator, Rabbi Kahn served on many social agency boards including the Red Cross, Boy Scouts, United Way, Houston Metropolitan Ministries, the Rothko Chapel and Herman Eye Clinic.  He was also President of the Houston Rotary Club, Chaplain of the Houston Police Department and a member of the Rabbinic Advisory Committee of the United Jewish Appeal. He is also the author of Lessons for Life, Ten Commandments for Today, The Letter and the Spirit.
