centered by the arms possibly of Baker impaling the arms of another above the motto HONOS VIRTUTIS SATELLES. The front edge with the inlaid inscription DARMANIN MALTA; together with a 20th century ebonized base.
Catalogue Note
The motto Honos Virtutis Satelles is that of the Baker family of Leicester, Co. Tipperary, Ireland; however, the present arms are slightly different.
During the 19th and early 20th century the Darmanin family was active in Malta. They owned a large marble works which produced sculpture as well as table tops. The names Carlo, Girolamo and Giovanni Darmanin appear in the records held in the Maltese National Archives. A similar pair of pietre dura table tops also by J Darmanin & Sons, Malta was made for Charles William, 3rd Marquess of Londonderry of Wynyard Park, County Durham, sold Sotheby's, London, 26th November 25, 2003, lot 123.
