Description

  • length 3 3/4 in.
  • 9.5 cm
the young hare naturalistically modelled crouching with its ears laid back, the cover with a red anchor mark, both cover and base with numeral 110 in iron-red. The cover slightly misfired.

Provenance

Sold, Christie's, London, May 22, 1989, lot 187
Earle D. Vandekar, New York

Condition

The cover has a very minor 1/8 shallow chip to the edge and appears to have misfired and warped in the firing making it a bit ill-fitting, as with most examples of this model. The enamels also seem to have been affected somewat by the firing. The palette of the brown patches differ slightly from cover to base; however, the size, shape and brush strokes of the patches match through. Otherwise the box and cover are in good condition.

Catalogue Note

The Chelsea 1755 sale Catalogue, Second Day's Sale, March 11th, lot 18, mentions "...four rabbits for desart" which almost certainly refers to the smaller models of rabbit boxes or tureens such as the present example rather than the larger soup tureens mentioned on the Seventh Day's Sale, March 17th, lot 32, "...a rabbit big as life".
A similar leveret box and cover was in the Doris Duke collection, sold at Christie's, New York, June 3, 2004, lot 363, and two other examples were sold at Christie's, London, May 14, 2003. lots 230 and 231.
