woven with a formally constructed and elaborate fountain with enclosed formal gardens beyond, the foreground with moss covered and fruit vine clad tree stumps with birds perched upon them, including a peacock, and a river meandering through from the top left to the centre front, with a bridge in the distance, the foreground with stylised ferns and foliage and with flowering plants and shrubs; lacking border, with later selvedge

Literature

Margaret Swain, Tapestries and Textiles: Palace of Holyroodhouse, HMSO for the Royal Collection, 1988, pp.48-49, nr. 13, (T48 & T46a), illustrates, in black and white, two of several Verdures or Forest Work pieces recorded in the collection, most of which have floral borders and bead and reel inner and outer narrow borders. The boldness of weave and predominance of stylised foliage and use of bridges shows similarity to the offered tapestry.

Condition

Colour not as yellow in reality. Greens more vibrant, apple and emerald tones and not so dark. Yellows more golden. More defined and crisper in reality. Tapestry lacking decorative border, has narrow banded yellow and brown edging. Velcro attached across the top for hanging purposes. Tapestry had been cleaned and lined. Some minor repairs to light areas, commensurate with age, see sky, and water areas, and large flowers silhouetted against the water, bottom left corner. Some white stitches visible, commensurate with the technique of joining colour change splits. There is a vertical join up the centre of the tapestry, see the wooden door surround in the garden fence, in the centre. It does not detract from the overall appearance. Attractive tapestry, versatile size and subject matter to hang.
