Catalogue Note
The sitters in this attractive early portrait are probably the family of George Marriott, "the renowned draper of Melton who for years, superbly mounted, showed the way for the yeomen brigade in the blue coat and yellow buttons" (Major Guy Paget, The Melton Mowbray of John Ferneley, 1931). Ferneley's portrait of Marriott on his bay hunter was sold at Sotheby's in New York, 4th June, 1887, lot 116. Ferneley's account books list several portraits of the Marriott family including Mr Marriott (1815), Miss and Master Marriott, Horse and Dogs (1832), two portraits of Mr Marriott on horseback (1844 and 1845), and Portrait of Mrs Marriott and Mrs Marriott's Horse (1849).
