Catalogue Note

This is a very interesting satirical scene. In 1831 Cruikshank made engravings for the publication of The Voice of Humanity for which he depicted similar scenes entitled The Knacker's Yard, or the Horse's Last Home (illustrated in H & M. Evans, The Man who Drew the Drunkard's Daughter; The Life and Art of George Cruikshank, 1978, p. 72). Cruikshank's characterisations of the horses and their rider's in that scene strongly suggest this painting may well be by the same hand.
