Catalogue Note
Dandenongs Landscape is one of the late vistas of the Dandenong Ranges which Arthur Streeton painted from on or near his property 'Longacres'. The view is taken looking north from Olinda towards the Mount Dandenong ridge and beyond to Kangaroo Ground and Mt Macedon in the distance. A very similar afternoon view, though from some way further back, is seen in A Mountain Side (1935, Westpac Banking Corporation Collection), and the present work could well be described in the same terms as those used by the Herald critic: 'This is Australia in the making, the light true to its hour and the great range held exactly in its place by unfailing knowledge and skill, beautiful in colour as in drawing.'1
In A Mountain Side the foreground is dominated by a mass of cut and sawn timber, reflecting Streeton's anxieties regarding the continuing deforestation of the ranges. In the present work, a 'For Sale' sign is clearly visible lower right, in front of the denuded hill, and may well be intended to convey a similar sentiment.
We are most grateful to Oliver Streeton for his assistance in cataloguing this work.
