Catalogue Note
Guan Wei was born in Beijing in 1953, where he graduated from Beijing Capital University and worked as a high school art teacher before leaving China in 1989. After completing a number of succesful residencies in Australia (at Tasmanian School of Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney and the Canberra School of Art), Guan was granted permanent residency in 1993. Since then he has held almost forty solo exhibitions and has received numerous grants and awards, including the Conrad Jupiters Art Prize (1998), the Mosman Art Prize (2001) and the Sulman Prize (2002). His work is held in all major national, state and regional collections in Australia, as well as in China, Japan and Hong Kong.
Guan's work arises from his particular, personal experience of travel and exile, and often addresses issues of national, racial and cultural identity. His elegant, stylised and often complex compositions feature unlikely, even surreal contrasts and hybridities: Classical Chiniese screens and western comic strips; cartopgrahy and advertising; oriental mythology and antipodean natural history. Guan Wei's refined political sense and fertile, comic imagination makes him one of the most sophisticated of Australia's postcolonial artists.
