of urn form, the shaped flaring rim pierced with tight interlocking scrolls above etched band of large foliate scrolls and clover vines, the body similarly etched and inscribed Champion Challenge Cup of the Springfield Tennis Company, the circular pedestal base applied with three openwork racquet heads, fitted on removable Japanned pedestal base set with six silver roundels, four engraved with presentation inscriptions, cup marked on underside and numbered 9995-2258

Catalogue Note

Four of the silver roundels are engraved "Won by Frederick H. Gillett" and are respectively dated 1888 to 1901.  Frederick Huntington Gillet (1851-1935) was a Representative and Senator from Massachusetts.  He was an 1874 graduate of Amherst College and received a law degree from Harvard University in 1877.  Upon admission to the bar, Gillet practiced law in Springfield, MA.  He was named Speaker of the House of Representatives and chairman of the Committee on Reform in the Civil Service.  Gillet was elected to the United States Sentate in 1924, and served from March, 1925 to March, 1931.
