Catalogue Note

This coffee pot is very close to the model 4872, designed by Edward C. Moore for Tiffany's display at the 1878 Paris Exposition.  The model number indicates that example was designed in 1878, as part of the first wave of TIffany's Japanese-style designs.

The hammering and mounting design of tomato plants is unusual; most of Tiffany's pots in this vein being decorated with trailing gourd vines.   Tomato vines were already being used on Vine-pattern servers, though, a pattern introduced in 1872 and attributed to Edward C. Moore.  A creamer related to this piece, with copper and "Japanese gold" tomatoes, was sold Christie's, New York, January 18, 2007, lot 175.
