Introduction:
A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Claude Conover created unique stoneware vessels with monumental scale reminiscent of ancient earthenware designs. Utilizing a high temperature heating process, he was able to develop the rich earth tones of the body, which he decorated with bold geometric scoring washed with white. Alluding to the artist's inspiration, each work is a given a name of Mayan origin, which is as unique as the shape and patterning of its hand-built form.
Conover is regarded as a member of the group of noted artists and designers dubbed the Cleveland School, active in the 1920s-1960s and founders of the Cleveland School of Art. Also included in this collective are distinguished ceramicists Viktor Schreckengost and Leza McVey.
