Description
- George Nakashima
- "Greenrock" Console Table from the Japanese House, Pocantico Hills, New York
underside marked Greenrock
an elaborately figured English oak burled top with striking fissures, sculptural organic topography and recessed hollows paired with a free edge standard and base
Provenance
Acquired directly from the artist by the present owner
Literature
Mira Nakashima, Form, Nature and Spirit: The Life and Legacy of George Nakashima, New York, 2003, pp. 214-217 (for a discussion of the Rockefeller's Japanese House)
Condition
Overall excellent condition. With a few scattered surface scratches to the top and the top surface of the base as expected with use. With four minor chips with losses (two of which are visible in the catalogue illustration) to the front thin freeform edge, mostly to the underside and therefore difficult to see when looking at the piece. The back edge of the piece is finished, but flat, which indicates that the piece was intended to be used against a wall. Minor white paint residue to the proper right side and reverse edge of the top. The overall color of the work is slightly more green and not as yellow as it appears in the catalogue illustration. A very rare opportunity to acquire a work from one of Nakashima's most important commissions.
